The word "aloha" is a portmanteau of "alo," which means "presence," and "ha," which means "breath of life." The Spirit of Aloha is a way of life that emphasizes the importance of mutual respect. Also central to it is the understanding of the importance of loving oneself and to spread that love to others.
It was believed that living the Spirit of Aloha was a method of attaining nirvana. The kahunas, or priests, of the past taught that aloha involved the sending and receiving of energy and living in harmony. Living the Spirit of Aloha creates an environment of everlasting positive thoughts that spreads to others.
